International Dot Day

Last Monday, was International Dot Day, but we celebrated all week in the Media Center!  Dot Day is based on the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and began on September 15, 2099 when teacher Terry Shay introduced the book in his classroom.  It has become a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration.  Mrs. Reid read the book to each student via YouTube...click here to watch.

To celebrate in the Media Center, students retold the story and we talked about how we can make our mark in our school, in our families and in the world!  We had some great ideas!!  I got to visit some classrooms so we could decorate dots!

The Books are ALIVE!!

BES had its annual reading parade on Friday, September 5.  Students that completed their summer reading and turned in their logs were able to walk, but everyone could join in the fun of dressing up!

Mrs. Reid told the walkers that we don't have dress up as characters for the characters to come alive, all we have to do is read the book!

image.jpegThat is what I love about reading...I can be someone else, go to places I have never been, and meet people I would never have the chance to meet all through BOOKs!!!

Tail Waggin' Tutors

BES is fortunate to participate in the Tail Waggin' Tutor program through Therapy Dogs International (TDI).  As explained on the TDI website, "The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and "dog-friendly" atmosphere, which allows students to practice the skill of reading."

And, this is exactly what we do!  A student from each grade level is chosen, by the grade level teachers, to come read to the reading dog each Monday for 15 minutes.  The students love it and are proud that they get to come read to Penny!  This year we will have a second Tail Waggin' Tutor and we are excited to add Bentley to the BES family in November!

Tail Waggin' Tutors can also be found in the local libraries.  Bentley is part of the Tail Waggin' Tutor program at the Winder Library and Penny is part of the Reading to Rover program at the Athens-Clarke County Library.

For more information on the Tail Waggin' Tutor program you can visit the TDI website.  To find out about Tail Waggin' Tutors or Reading to Rover at the local public libraries please visit the following websites:
